This workshop will model a set of proven strategies that Extended Curriculum and other academic teachers can use to embed reading (and writing) skills in curriculum teaching. The strategies have together been dubbed ‘Scaffolding Academic Literacy’, and are also part of the Reading to Learn methodology, known in South Africa as RtL. Central principles of the strategies include:

  • Embedding literacy skills in reading and writing of whole curriculum texts
  • Designing learning interactions to support all students for continual success
  • Analysing curriculum texts to plan effective lessons
  • Sequencing learning activities to build skills and knowledge.

The workshop will use curriculum texts that are relevant for South African Extended Curriculum Programmes, to model reading and writing strategies known as Preparing for Reading, Paragraph-by-Paragraph Reading, Notemaking and Joint Construction.
